Clinical records: custody, retention and export

Who is responsible for clinical data, how long it’s kept and how you take it with you.

Updated on 8 Oct 2026 · 1 min read

As a self-employed professional, you’re responsible for keeping the clinical record (Spanish Law 41/2002). Vínculo stores it on your behalf, encrypted and on EU servers.

Retention

The law requires keeping it for at least 5 years after each course of care ends. Some regions require longer (for example, Catalonia requires 15 years for certain documents). Vínculo applies your region’s period and blocks deletion while it lasts.

Subjective notes

They have a separate field. They’re not included when a patient exercises their right of access.

Export

You can export records, consent forms and questionnaires at any time, and of course if you decide to leave Vínculo.
